Alresford Action Plan

TRANSPORT

The Transport Group objective was to make recommendations for an outline traffic plan which met the reasonable aspirations of the majority of residents and employers/employees in the town, having regard to current problems and likely future developments. The work was undertaken against the background of public concern about parking, significant heavy lorry movements throughout the main town routes and annually increasing private cars use.

Critical Transport Issues

The group identified the following points as critical issues:

  • Heavy lorry movements throughout the town.
  • Hazards to pedestrians, wheel chair users and people with disabilities, because of poorly surfaced and maintained footways and footpaths.
  • Safety problems to pedestrians, wheel chair users and people with disabilities because of obstructions to footways and footpaths (such as overhanging trees and unkempt hedges).
  • Peak time safety problems at school entrances.
  • Vehicular speeding in town roads, particularly in Jacklyn's Lane, the Avenue and on Grange Road.
  • vailability of sufficient residents and visitor parking spaces within the town centre.
  • Maintenance of roadside trees, hedges and grass banks, causing obstruction to the carriageways, thereby creating potential danger to road users.
  • Limited availability of public transport, therefore encouraging greater use of private cars.
  • Limited safe pedestrian and wheel chair access north/south of town, because of narrow passageway at Jacklyn's Lane and Sun Lane railway bridge junctions.
